Old Royal Naval College | News | Painted Hall Conservation Project

We are delighted to announce that the Heritage Lottery Fund have awarded us a second-round pass for a £3.1million grant towards our £7 million Painted Hall Conservation Project. Over the next three years we plan to conserve the remaining 40,000 square feet of Thornhill’s masterpiece and restore the Painted Hall to its former glory. The project will also give us an opportunity to share conservation skills and bring the stories behind the Painted Hall to life in creative ways. The conservation project will focus on the Lower Hall, whose magnificent ceiling depicts the founders of the Royal Hospital for Seamen – King William III and Queen Mary II – and the Vestibule, with its soaring cupola, which lists the donors who contributed to the establishment of the Royal Hospital.
