Richard II | RSC

Richard is King. A monarch ordained by God to lead his people. But he is also a man of very human weakness. A man whose vanity threatens to divide the great houses of England and drag his people into a dynastic civil war that will last 100 years. RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran directs David Tennant in the title role.

Richard II is the first production in a new cycle of Shakespeares History plays, directed by Gregory, that will be performed over the coming seasons. David is joined in the company by Oliver Ford Davies, who also appeared with him in the acclaimed 2008 Hamlet.Richard II will transfer to the Barbican Theatre, London, from 9 December 2013 to 25 January 2014. RSC Members priority booking will open in March 2013.

Richard II doesnt have the cachet of some of the Shakespearean heavyweights but I enjoyed Kevin Spacey camping up the role of Richard a few years ago.

Whoovians will no doubt look forward to David Tennant. Oliver Ford Davies blew everyone else off stage in Alls Well that ends well at the National – DT will have to let it rip to compete.
