Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Avant-Garde – review | Art and design | The Observer

The pre-Raphaelites were an odd bunch. On the one hand they gave UK painting direction at a time when it desperately needed it on the other I am not particularly keen on that direction.

Almost all of them – Rosetti, Hunt, Millais, especially Millais – seem very precious to me with their carefully staged set pieces.

Worth a look though.
